show up
Monday, September 19, 2011 at 05:26PM Woody Allen said that “Eighty percent of success is showing up.” By now we all have an idea of how this principle works. You didn't want to try that new thing, go there or meet that new person but when you did it worked out ok. Something clicked, you expanded your horizons and you grew. Once that experience is behind you, there is a realization that if you wouldn't have shown up, none of that good stuff would have happened.
If you've ever learned to play a musical instrument you know this principle well. When you first picked that instrument up, you were like a blind person. Unable to imagine what would happen or whether it would ever sound good. Doubtful you would ever really get it. Over a long period of time, you show up and your practice becomes steady. After much more time you really get it and become a musician. It takes a long time to become and only after we truly show up.
Anything really worth it, requires us to show up. We can fantasize about it, think it to death or get really distracted by a number of things that suck our energy. Yet we have all experienced that intense feeling of really sinking into something and coming out the other side, with the skill or knowledge or feeling of elation. It is uniquely yours and is what makes you....you. But you have to start by showing up.
